Some words from our Board Member Michele Theiman
I had lived in Park Rapids for nearly 10 years before I really understood what a gem we have in the Nemeth. As someone who has lived in some larger cities, I’ve had opportunity to see good art – old and historic art, new and modern art, and very awesome exciting art making stops around the globe. But I was in a big city – it was a given these opportunities would abound. I’m sure you’ve had a similar experience. Either you have lived somewhere where there is good art – sculpture, music, drawings theatre or paintings – or you’ve traveled and seen it. The creativity of the artists I’ve seen constantly amazes my logic-dominated brain. I’m a scientist – I do math, medicine, science – I like to sing, and cook. Those are my limited artistic gifts. But these people who make amazing art from deep within their soul - they amaze me! I am better because of the art that surrounds me.
As you may know, the Nemeth is home to a collection of 42 paintings in the style of 16th and 17th Century European Masters, including works by current American artists. This collection has served as the cornerstone of the Nemeth, formerly known as the “North Country Museum,” for decades.
But did you know that over the past few years, the Nemeth has shown work by artists who have been on display at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC (Wayne Gudmundson), The Plains Art Museum in Fargo, ND (Wayne Gudmundson, Julia Buffalohead, Gregory Fitz), The Minneapolis Institute of Art (Alexa Horochowski, Alyssa Baguss, Gregory Fitz), The Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis (Julia Buffalohead, Kate Casanova), and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis (Alyssa Baguss).
But you don’t need to travel to Minneapolis or NYC or Fargo -- you can see these artists, and many others, in little Park Rapids, Minnesota. When people who don’t live here ask me what there is to do, I used to talk about the lakes and the trails. “Come get in touch with nature,” I’d say. “Enjoy the peace and tranquility of a summer sunset on the shores.” And I still say that, and I’m sure you do too. But I’m also thrilled to be able to talk about the fun shopping, the good food, and even more and more, the wonderful art you can see and experience in Park Rapids. Many good people are working thoughtfully and diligently to make the artistic scene in Park Rapids more and more exciting every day. We at the Nemeth Art Center are working hard to make that happen too. Please consider financially supporting the Nemeth Art Center with your gifts. Please consider a donation via Give to the Max, or directly to our own web page, Please consider a gift of your time – we are happy to take volunteers to gallery sit, assist with projects, fundraise and just add to the exciting vibes in the old courthouse we call home.
The Nemeth Art Center – we’re where its at!
