History
The Nemeth Art Center originated as the North Country Museum of Art in 1977. When the original Hubbard County Courthouse was vacated for a new building next door, the county gifted the building to the Hubbard County Historical Society and a group of community members joined together to convert the second floor into a series of exhibition galleries. The inaugural exhibit consisted of nearly forty European paintings dating back to the Renaissance from the collection of local resident Gabor Nemeth, an art restorer of international reputation. Following the immense popular response for that original show the community initiated renovation efforts to create a permanent gallery dedicated to sharing art.
For decades, the North Country Museum of Art exhibited creative work by students and accomplished local artists. Beginning in the 2010s, the museum expanded its offerings to add acclaimed regional and national contemporary artists to our seasonal offerings. The courthouse building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and NAC’s spacious main gallery occupies the former courtroom while two smaller adjoining galleries occupy the former administrative offices of the court. The space is well-suited to versatile display of large format paintings, prints, sculpture, photography, projections, and live performance.
In 2014, the museum changed its name to The Nemeth Art Center in memory of Gabor Nemeth’s key role in starting the gallery. The NAC is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation whose board of directors are local resident interested in having the arts enrich the lives of community members and visitors alike. We are committed to creating opportunities for contemporary artists, students and community members to share enriching experiences with challenging and inspiring works of art in an intimate setting.
